Match Comments:
Semi Final day had arrived and Kilmore were to be our opposition. Our toughest challenge this season was now. I could see determination on the faces of our Rookies and could also sense the butterflies. So it was now or never, the warm up was good, some marking, handballs and kicking drills to get used to the windy conditions.
The Rookies were all pumped to play the game of their season and we couldn’t have asked for a better first quarter, Kilmore kicked with the wind and the Rookies defended brilliantly restricting Kilmore to one point (who had in previous games got off to flying starts and scored quick goals.)
Now kicking with the wind we had our fair share of the play, we were just unlucky not to put a major on the board but Kilmore showed some class and strong marking and therefore managed two majors. The Rookies were following all the rules and committing themselves 100%. Half time scores were Gisborne 0.3 to Kilmore 2.2
At the main break we could see some exhausted faces on the kids, they had run and run, they needed oranges, a drink and a rest. They could sense they were in the hunt; we needed to hold our marks and be a little more desperate in amongst the packs. Both sides were hard at it and desperately trying to score a third term goal. The Rookies ran and used the ball well looking out for their teammates, we had the ball a fair amount around the forward line but Kilmore’s defence just held too strong. Matt, Tom, Isaac and Ben were doing their utmost to kick the ball forward, Dylan and Darbs battled to keep it in. Nick, Nathan and Adam did their best to restrict Kilmore from scoring. Things were mighty tuff out there.
Third quarter scores: Gisborne 0.4 to Kilmore 3.5
Not much else could be said at three quarter time, the Rookies were giving their all and we could see on their faces they were almost spent, they had run, chased, tackled and not ever given up. They were asked to somehow keep persisting, stay positive and find 10% more. Well they found 20% more! The Rookies attacked with plenty. Dylan and Matt’s group tackle resulted in Matty scoring our first goal, then a strong mark from Kade nearly resulted in our second only to narrowly miss, then a top tackle from Dylan resulted in just hitting the post from a set shot. The Rookies had Kilmore extremely under pressure and kept the ball hammering forward, we had our chances but just couldn’t quite get there. The pressure the kids were under was huge, they rose to the challenge like champions and they should hold their heads high after putting in a brilliant effort today and for the entire season. They showed great commitment to each other, tried their best to follow team rules and their improvement was off the scale. Well done Rookies, great season, fantastic commitment and a pleasure to coach you throughout the season.

Match Comments:
On a very chilly day the Rookies travelled to Melton for their last game of the home and away season. Kizza wore the captain’s badge for the first half and the Rookies started full of run but overcrowding around the ball made it difficult for the team to capitalize on the scoreboard. Nathan scored our only goal for the quarter.
At quarter time the Rookies were asked to put their running training drills into action and to spread out and share the ball. The plan worked a treat, the forwards found more run and space and Dylan was in and under playing a ripper game moving the footy forward quickly. With the forward line open and the Rookies were sharing it around well, Kade was lapping it up with the opportunity to score three goals.
At half time the Rookies held a healthy lead despite Melton putting the pressure on. The team did a flip, forwards to backs and backs to forward and Dylan took over as captain.
The second half was a fairly even contest; Melton certainly had improved from our round one encounter, putting a lot more pressure on our kids. It was a great challenge for the Rookies to win the contested ball, they worked extremely hard and tried their best to look out for each other and follow the team rules. The Rookies managed to score three more goals to Melton’s one.
Final scores Rookies 7.5.47 to Melton 1.2.8

Match Comments:
The Rookies were host to Diggers Rest for their last home game of the season. Today we had the extra incentive of Isaac’s birthday and the whopping big cake he bought to celebrate! The Rookies were asked to show off some of the skills they had been working on at training, pressure, kicking long, linking up handballs and a minimum of two tackles each.
The first quarter the Rookies had most of the play around their forward line but Diggers defence played in front and repelled every advance we made. The Rookies were not moving the ball as smart as they could and were crowding the forward line in bunches and not spreading out. Somehow Tip Toe Michael found some space and swooped onto a loose ball picking it up cleanly and scored our first goal and his first for the year. (Well done Michael!)
Quarter time scores – Gisborne 1.2 to Diggers 0
At the break the Rookies were asked to open up the forward line and spread out and share the ball around. Again, most of the play was around our half forward line but Diggers again defended well and our ball use was not great. Our defence stood up when required and kept Diggers scoreless at halftime.
Half time scores – Gisborne 1.3 to Diggers 0
Some water, oranges and encouragement to put our footy brains into action was required at half time to lift our efforts at being first for the footy, run more and look for our teammates. Well it certainly worked because we were much more desperate and used the ball a lot cleaner. The forward line played in front, the wall to defend the footy from Diggers clearing it out was working. Jack Manago scored a great goal, we also had many other attempts with Michael narrowly missing twice. Although we kicked five points it was great to see the endeavour by all.
Three quarter time scores – Gisborne 2.8 to Diggers 0
Snakes for energy and everyone wanting to play forward, the Rookies were told to continue playing as a team and look out for each other. Diggers came out challenging and within a few minutes they scored their first goal. I think this fired up the Rookies because they then kicked the next four straight! Jack M, Adam, Liam M and the Tomahawk sharking a pass from Jack millimetres from the line. Liam Howard presented well across half forward, marking well and creating play to have input to two of the goals. Well done Rookies, great finish.
Final scores – Gisborne 6.8.44 to Diggers 1.1.7
Special thanks to Sonia and Colleen for organising the fish and chips for everybody and Maryann, Milli and (Dave for baking the cake).

Match Comments:
Oh Boy, what an intense game of footy. Big bumps, bruises and hard running! Hearts were held in mouths all over the ground. The Rookies played a mighty game consisting of Courage, Commitment and Desperation.
Captains Josh and Motty led the team out today with excitement, we started with only 17 today so the Rookies were challenged to work hard in defense, and run hard forward. We couldn't have asked for a better start, the Rookies moved the ball quickly and put pressure on Rockbanks defense. A nice pass from Jamie to Matt McD saw him take the mark then finish off all the teams tough work and score an important goal. This was important because the next 5mins were not. Samantha came off from a big bump giving her a wonky head, then Jack P was taken out by a big front on bump and giving him wobbly legs. Rookies down to 15, runner George was out hurriedly to make quick positional changes. Siren was needed for all to regain composure.
Qtr time and a much needed drink rookies led 1.4.10 vs 0.0
The 2nd quarter went along a similar path, both teams played extremely hard, the Rookies had to dig deeper after Liam Howard left the ground with a blood nose. Now down to 14. Defense was strengthened at the expense of attack to try and hold out Rockbank and the small lead we had.
Isaac, Josh, Jack, Tom, Jamie, Nick & both Matt's continued their tireless efforts. Our backs were up against it on a heavy track but to great commitment the team battled on solidly and kept Rockbank to 1 goal. Score Gis 1.4.10 to 1.2.8
A much needed rest, some oranges and water. Coach needed to access his wounded, Liam came back on, Nathan went onto the ball for much needed leg speed, Isaac relieved Josh from ruck duties, Adam moved from attack to defense, Tyler and Michael to the goals (Ty not feeling well but wouldn't come off) Nick with a bung knee controlled the backline and read play the play well. We had about 10 fit bodies.
Ben and Tom continued to throw their bodies around without fear, Josh, Darb and Jack held firm down back, Isaac blitzed in the ruck and Matt and Jamie ran hard from CHF to CHB and back.
Ben took a gutsy mark forward for the team and after opposition backchat received two 15mt penalties, then slotted through a huge goal for the team. The Rookies rallied extremely hard and kept Rockbank scoreless. Well Done team.
Scores at 3quarter time Gisb 2.6.18 v 1.2.8
The next 15minutes were going to be crucial and tense for us all. The Rookies were determined to battle on against all odds. They were asked to somehow find a little extra?? Man up and defend as hard as they could. Jack P came back on(Well Done) The Rookies ran their little legs off, the ball spent most of the time between Rockbank's forward line and the centre line. Nick, Jack, Darby and Adam were outstanding in defense and their teammates all dug deep to lend strong support. Rockbank attacked with everything they possibly could but the Rookies, to their credit, clung on to be victors by the smallest margin. Final scores ; Rookies 2.6.18 to 2.5.17
Rookies I was so proud of how you battled on today under extreme pressure. Heads up, you all did a terrific job. Well Done!

Match Comments:
Today the Rookies were away verses the top of the table Rupertswood. Last time the two teams met it was a titanic struggle with both defensive lines battling extremely hard.
Missing two of our key players, Liam McKinney away and Matty Mott injured, the Rookies were defiant, that they were going to work extra hard.
A cold, dewy ground was where it started. Tyler and Jack P won the toss ready for action. A sluggish first few minutes but the Rookies soon thawed out and got firing. Kade kicked a cracking long goal for the first score of the morning. The Rookies kept the ball moving forward with great desperation. Josh was next to get us a major, some great running aggression, pushing his opponent out of the way and slamming it through. Scores at quarter time were, Rookies 2.1.13 Rupo 0.0.0.
The second quarter would be our next challenge. Can we continue the momentum knowing that Rupo would fight back strongly? The footy was rebounded between both half backs. The Rookies were under intense pressure by Rupo but they stood brilliantly firm. It was by far their best defensive quarter this year, Rupo scored 2 points.
The kids came in at half time for a well earned orange and looking mighty exhausted. The second half was played out in similar fashion to the first and in good spirit, everyone applied themselves 100% plus, they ran and chased and tackled with great commitment. We went forward a few times only to just fall short. Rupo on the other hand managed to score a couple of goals.
An injury to Sam and head clash to Jack P and Isaac, one showed commitment of the Rookies and two, how tough it was out on the ground.
I Hope you’re all feeling warm and better. Final score, Rupo 3.5.23 to Gisb 2.1.13.
The parents and I were so pleased with the kids amazing effort today, keep up the good work Rookies.

Match Comments:
Today the Rookies fronted up all clean and smiley for their team photo, before they were to tackle the strong, classy Kilmore. This was to be one of their biggest challenges to date. The Rookies have come off some good wins and some solid training in preparation to make improvements on their first round matches.
Captains Dylan and Nathan had the ball rolling early by winning the toss. The Rookies focused well in the warm ups and were concentrating on manning up, kicking long to advantage and encouraging each other. Kilmore got the early breaks on the board in both the first and second quarters but the Rookies battled on solidly in a terrific never give up attitude. Well done kids. Although we were kept goalless, there was an all round, hard working team effort. At the main break Kilmore led 5.2 to 0.2
A rest, some oranges and a few positional changes, the Rookies regrouped and were ready to tackle the second half. A heavy ball and legs and with extra weight from the rain and the muddy ground, the third quarter was a titanic struggle. We kept the ball moving forward and tackled relentlessly, once again one of our strongest attributes. A well deserved, team rewarding goal came off the boot of Sammy Mason (her first for the year and mum went bananas!) Great effort team and Sammy. Many forward advances were had but Kilmore’s defence was mighty strong.
The Rookies battled tirelessly in the last quarter, desperate to score another goal. Joshy Freake created some great pack play to break free and charge forward to the goal, only for the ball to decide to go between the little sticks.
Kilmore ran out victors today but I was proud of everyone’s efforts to keep chasing and have a solid crack, learning the difference in concentrating and hitting their targets, manning up for a full game and running in numbers. Well done Rookies, great effort in the rain and MUD much to your delight but not so sure about your folks! Maybe we should have had a before and after photo!

Match Comments:
The Rookies headed into the game against Melton Centrals looking for their 3rd win in a row. After a very wet Saturday, we were expecting a wet and soggy ground at McPherson Park, but the ground was in surprisingly good condition. The team was looking forward to a good game, having beaten Melton Central in the first game of the year, but they knew they would not be easy to beat. This week's captains, Jack Manago & Liam McKinney started well by winning the toss and choosing to kick with a slight breeze. The first quarter saw Rookies dominating the play with Isaac, Jack M and Michael getting plenty of the ball out if the middle, and Adam and Tom working hard in the forward line. Josh was presenting really well at Full Forward, and was rewarded with 2 goals for the quarter. The team came into Quarter time leading 3-5-23 to no score. The stand in coach made the radical move at Quarter time of having all players remaining in their positions on the ground, so that the forwards became backs, and backs became forwards. The Rookies worked hard against the wind in the second quarter, with Tyler Sullivan inspiring the side with some tremendous tackles, and Isaac, Nick and Jack Manago continuing to play well. Nathan Williams also came into the game in the second quarter, as did Matty, sending the ball into our forward line on numerous occasions. The Rookies again dominated play in the second quarter, but only managed to score 3 behinds in a scrappy affair.
After some well deserved oranges at half time, the team was ready to again take advantage of the wind in the 3rd quarter. With Kade going into the ruck, and Adam and Tom having a run on the ball, the Rookies dominated the play for most of the 3rd quarter. Tyler continued his great form, and Sam had an excellent quarter with some great marks and handballs. Special mention to Nick for kicking a goal from the back pocket (although we did speak about staying in position!!) The Rookies did let their guard down towards the end of the quarter which allowed Melton to kick a late goal, but they did win the quarter 3 goals 5 behinds to 1 goal.
At 3/4 time the team was handed a challenge to kick 2 goals against the wind in the last quarter, and to continue to run, share the ball and tackle. Despite Melton going into their forward line a couple of times, the majority of the play in the last quarter was in the Rookies forward line, with Ben Galea providing plenty of excitement across half forward, along with Nathan, Michael, Jack M getting plenty of the ball. Jack Prater also nearly kicked a great goal, although he kicked it straight through the points, thinking they were the goals! Josh was getting bored standing at full back so he decided to run the length of the field to get a kick and very nearly snagged a goal in the last few minutes, and Kade drifted into the forward line as the roaming Ruckman and snapped a great goal from 20 metres out. The Rookies finished the quarter strongly, kicking 2 goals 4 behinds against the wind, holding Melton scoreless.
Whilst the end result was a great 59 point win, the more pleasing thing was how the team continued to work hard, share the ball through some excellent teamwork. The tackling was superb today, led by Tyler and Isaac, and everyone made a contribution to the win. For the stand in coach, it was a pleasure to coach the team and revert back to the 'runners' duties next game, with a 100% win rate. Thanks to George Galea for a great job running today as he had lots of messages to deliver!! Well done Rookies, a great game and a great win.

Match Comments:
The Rookies were extremely excited to get out on the park for their 1st taste of wet weather football. With Melton undermanned to 15 it gave the Rookies a good chance to practice hard running and long kicking. They responded well and had Melton under lots of pressure from the start. The midfield worked hard and moved the ball quickly, much to Adam's delight, he had his opponent under extreme pressure dodging and weaving around and kicking a fabulous 5 goals.(The rumour was that Adam said to his dad he felt a 5 goal haul coming on. His dad's response was, you'll be lucky to snag 3 after hitting the post 3 times last week and getting the nickname Poster!) Well Done Ads, sharp Shooting !!
The Rookies held a lead of 5 goals to nil.
But the 2nd quarter was a mystery,i think the Rookies had a nap?? and were outplayed by Melton.
At the main break the Rookies were asked to improve on there endeavour, teamwork and manning up to which they did. Goals to Jack M, Matt Mc and Ben was pleasing, Darbs was also playing his best game of the season in the centre whilst several others were showing terrific improvements.
The last quarter the Rookies were holding a healthy lead, also several rotations were made and no complaints came forward as much as all were busting to get out there. Well done kids!Kade put the finishing touches on with 2 fine goals, a great rewarding day for the Rookies with everybody contributing to the win.
Congrats to Isaac, Jamie and Josh who filled in for Dales U/12s.
Best wishes to the injured and sick Matty Mott, Liam McKinney, Mikey Freake and Davey Lalor.

After waking up to a frosty morning in Gisborne, the Rookies were pleased to see the sun shining at Diggers Rest.
The Burras jumped the sleepy Rookies from the start with two super quick goals. A raz up from our runner, Darren, to man up and be more desperate around the ground was taken on board by all the players. More desperation and pressuring the ball forward worked as Josh pushed through the pack and scored our first goal.
At the quarter time break the coach demanded closer manning up all around the ground, longer kicking down the corridor and more desperation for the ball. The Rookies listened closely and were awarded instantly. Nick Smith wiped the sleep from his eyes after being out late barracking for his beloved Bombers and kicked the first of the teams four goals for the quarter. Kade was knocking the ball forward in the ruck and the rest of the team booted the ball long and forward at every opportunity, also taking the extra time to look for a team mate. Great work!
Special comments came from the parents for the persistant chasing and tackling by all the kids, Well done.
The third quarter had the Rookies with a healthy lead of five goals to two.The Burras now had the wind and were keen to push hard to bridge the gap. The Rookies battled well to hold off every counter attack. They built a wall across the centre line, determined not to let anything past. Kirrily took some fine marks up forward in an attempt for her first goal but the wind was too strong. (Fine effort Kizza!) Without a major score for the term the Rookies battled with great endevour and teamwork.
The last quarter, down wind, the Rookies were asked to share the ball around, keep the forward line open and use the corridor. They responded in difficult conditions with a goal to Matt McDonald through a shepherd from the Tomahawk. Matt's second goal came through another shepherd from Adam. Solid backline work stopped the Burras from scoring after the first quarter.
Well done Kids, keep up the good work. Congratulations to skippers Michael and Samantha and overall a terrific team effort with everyone contributing.

THE ROOKIES WERE OUT TO PUT ON A SHOW FOR THEIR MUMS ON MOTHER'S DAY, THE CAPTAINS NICK & BEN STARTED WELL BY WINNING THE TOSS AND KICKING WITH THE WIND. AFTER A TIGHT STRUGGLE FROM BOTH TEAMS AND NOT GIVING MUCH AWAY, THE ROOKIES, THROUGH SOME EXCELLENT TEAM WORK, SCORED THE 1ST 2GOALS. ONE TO TOM AND THE OTHER FROM NATHAN GIVING THE ROOKIES THE LEAD AT THE 1ST BREAK.
THE COACH WAS IMPRESSED WITH ALL THE HARD WORK AND ASKED ALL TO KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM, TO WHICH THEY DID. THE ROOKIES OUTPLAYED ROCKBANK FOR THE 2ND QTR AND ANOTHER 2GOALS TO NATHAN WAS TERRIFIC, THIS CAME ABOUT BY HARD RUNNING AND TEAMWORK, WELL DONE.
AFTER HALF TIME THE REAL ROCKBANK DECIDED TO TURN UP, THEY USED THEIR BIGGER BODIES AND PRESSURED OUR KIDS AND GAVE THEM NO FREEDOM AT ALL. THE BALL SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN THE DEAD POCKET GIVING US NO CHANCE TO SCORE AND IN THE MEANTIME ROCKBANK SCORED 3 THEMSELVES. WE LEAD BY A GOAL AT 3QTR TIME AND NURSED A FEW SORE BODIES.
NOT GIVING UP, THE ROOKIES CHASED TIRELESSLY IN THE LAST QTR BUT A COUPLE CLASSY GOALS FROM ROCKBANK AND SOME MORE HEAVY BUMPS IT WAS LOOKING TOUGH. A LAST MINUTE GOAL TO MATTY MOTT, THROUGH CREATIVE TEAMWORK, PUT US WITHIN REACH AGAIN BUT THE SIREN JUST BEAT US. ALMOST ROOKIES GREAT EFFORT !
A SPECIAL MENTION GOES OUT TO JACK M, TYLER, DARBY, MATT MOTT, AND JACK P WHO WORE SOME HEAVY BUMPS. HOPE YOU KIDS ARE FEELING BETTER.

AFTER A THRASHING FROM KILMORE LAST MATCH AND SOME HARD TRAINING ON THE TRACK, THE ROOKIES CAME OUT ATTACKING RUPERTSWOOD WITH PLENTY OF ENTHUSIAM. THE 1ST HALF WAS A BATTLE OF STRONG BACKLINES, FULL OF HARD TACKLES AND DASHING RUNS. BOTH SIDES WERE RED FACED AND IN NEED OF A REST BUT COULD ONLY REGISTER A MINOR SCORE EACH AT THE MAIN BREAK.
THE KIDS CAME OUT IN THE SECOND WITH THE SAME ENDEAVOR BUT RUPO WERE THE 1ST TO WHACK 1 ON THE BOARD. THE ROOKIES WERE EXTREMELY CLOSE BUT RUPO'S DEFENCE WAS TOO STRONG. THE LAST QTR SAW AN EXTREMELY DETERMINED ROOKIES TEAM TRYING TO CATCH UP. BOTH TEAMS SCORED A MAJOR EACH WITH NATHAN KICKING THE GOAL BUT UNFORTUNATELY RUPO WINNING BY A GOAL.
THE ROOKIES CAN HOLD THEIR HEADS HIGH WITH SOME BRILLIANT TACKLES AND RUN DOWNS. A GREAT IMPROVEMENT ALTOGETHER. KEEP WORKING HARD ON THE TRACK AND LOOKOUT ROCKBANK NEXT WEEK COZ WE'RE COMING !!

The team travelled to Kilmore feeling extremely confident BUT the Home team had news for our crew
They quickly had our defence under extreme pressure bagging 3goals in the 1st term.
The 2nd didn't come any easier as Kilmore kicked another 3 by terrific run and carry with the ball, putting their bodies in 1st and bumping ours out of the way. They tackled hard making us a little hesitant and also gained the free-kicks by being 1st for the ball.
Half Time Scores 6.4 to 0.1
A rev up at the break and the kids came out with a lot more intensity and persistance, the tackling improved, the run and pressure improved and the effort to be 1st for the ball improved. Although we were unable to score a major we went mighty close and held Kilmore to 3 behinds.
The final qtr was played out in similar fashion the kids committed themselves brilliantly a unlucky goal to Kilmore after the siren was the only score otherwise the rookies held their own and realised they could compete with a very fast and talented team.Good Effort to bounce back and lets be prepared to work harder and learn how to become a better side.

A very keen and excited team of 19 started their 2010 season in fine style. A great team effort which displayed plenty of relentless tackles and selfless handballs which created run through the middle of the ground, bringing their team mates into the game and putting pressure on the Melton Centrals players and also the scoreboard.
The first half brought some great play from the centres, Kade, Darby, Jack & Ben. Tom and Matt Mott giving the forwards first opportunity to get some goals on the board. Isaac worked hard tackling fiercly scoring 2 goals, Tyler burrowed in at every opportunity and snagged 1 for himself. Nathan Williams was also lively attempting to take mark of the year and kicking a goal.
After the main break, a few minor player changes, Matt Mc And Kirrily back in Gisborne colours after volunteering to help Centrals out and Nathan and Dylan putting on the Centrals jumpers to help out. Great team leadership kids!
A goalless 3rd quarter brought time to rest Kade in the ruck and bring him up to full forward. Isaac & Josh had a run in the middle, rucking well. The last quarter brought on 3 goals, 2 to Kade and 1 to Matty McD. Once again some unselfish run and handball helped the team achieve the results via Ben, Jack, Tomahawk, Motty and Ads.
Well done team, terrific start, keep working hard.
