What a great effort boys !! The rookies played Sunbury at Tony Clarke Macedon for the right to play in a preliminary final. Sunbury had run itself back into form after 3 losses by knocking off the 2nd side last week. What a game , our boys came out firing we had most of the play for the quarter with the ball locked in our forward line , however we just couldn't put the score on the board. Sunbury caught us on the break and kicked 1.1 to our zip The 2nd quarter proved to be a similar affair with Rookies dominating the play but not being able to put scoreboard pressure on Sunbury , again they caught us on the break kicking 1.2 to our unlucky behind ! Coach Lakey was inspiring with a stirring speech at half time , Marty urged the boys to keep doing the hard things and eventually it would turn our way and goals would come. The boys to their credit showed true fighting spirit , we were first to the ball , we chased , tackled , harassed got the first goal and were extremely unlucky not to convert the 3 behinds into goals. Sunbury managed to scrape a goal and hold an 11 point lead at 3 quarter time. Marty told the boys that regardless of the result he was proud of their performance and not to leave anything behind in this quarter. It was truly a fantastic effort the rookies got the first one and reduced the margin to 5 points. The ball hardly passed our half back line as the rookies pressed for the win , alas Sunbury managed to hold in an exciting finish. All credit goes to Sunbury for managing to soak up the pressure and repel the Rookies forward surges. Boys you should all hold you heads up high and be very proud of how you conducted yourselves not only this week but for the whole season. We hope you have all improved greatly as footballers and boys !! Thanks for a great season one that I hope you all remember for a long time. THANKS BOYS WELL DONE !

The top team for season 2010 Rupertswood came to the mud heap that was Gardiner on Sunday , wanting to send some shivers thru the completion the Rookies lost the toss and kicked into the wind. Our intensity from previous weeks was with us in the first quarter as the boys ran hard thru heavy mud and created some good forward movement just failing to kick goals on several occasions , our pressure forced Rupo wide throughout the quarter and the final result of 1.3 to 0.1 was a good start. Top teams are just that for a reason and Rupo gave us a bit of lesson in how to play into the wind , from the first bounce of the quarter they were at us like vultures and caused us to turn the ball over. They dropped of the packs and waited for their onballers to win the ball and ran forward in numbers to kick 2 Goals 2 to no score. The second half was excellent and our boys didn’t throw in the towel and continued to toil and work very hard ensuring a scoreless 3rd quarter. The boys should be very proud of how they ran the game with both teams kicking 1 goal for the final quarter. The game was still hot deep into time and effort was just fantastic. So the finals are here and we get the chance to really test ourselves , this week everything changes as teams and individuals show what they’ve got. Everyone wants to play well in a final , we will have an easy week on the track give the boys a freshen up from the heavy grounds and look forward to great contest on Sunday. Well done boys.

Match Comments:
Round 13 , the Rookies travelled to Boardman to take on Sunbury , for the past few weeks the boys efforts ( except the 2nd half against Melton South ) have been fantastic. Training has improved out of sight and the boys are starting to gain belief in each other the team rules and game plan. Marty has focused on game drills at training for the past 8 weeks , this week things started to pay off , we had not beaten a team above for the whole season until Sunday. The rookies burst out of the blocks , winning the clearances and running the opposition of their legs with slick handball and delivery to the open forward we pilled on 4.0 to Nil. Kicking into the wind in the second quarter the rookies continued to play in front , run in numbers and attack the Sunbury ball carriers at every opportunity this resulted in our best quarter for the season we held Sunbury to 1.1 whilst managing to kick 3.0 ourselves. The coach encouraged the boys not to rest on a great first half and continue to do all the things we had done in the first half , Sunbury came out hard not wishing to let us have one over them 2 weeks prior to playing each other in the finals , however the Rookies responded immediately to every Sunbury goal with one of our own allowing us to go into the final break 9.1 to 3.1. Sunbury again tried very hard and kicked the first of the quarter but the rookies dug deep and ran out the game strongly allowing only one score for the quarter. As our belief in each other grows we will continue to improve as players and as a team each week , we get the chance to take on the top side this week , a solid week on the track should hold in good stead and give us the opportunity to take another big scalp this week. Fantastic effort by each and every one of the boys , look forward to a big week on the track.

Match Comments:
The rookies played Melton South at Gardiner with the promise of win ensuring our spot in the top 4 for the finals. Our skipper for the day won the toss and elected to kick into the wind. The boys justified the decision by kicking 3.1 to a point in the first quarter. The rookies were asked to play the positive side of the ground and not allow Melton South to bottle it up. Our boys had plenty of opportunity to run over Melton South, however the boys got sucked in to playing the wrong side of the ground and could only manage 1.2 to a point for the quarter allowing us to go into half time with a 26 point lead. Marty urged the boys to run and carry into the wind , play the positive side , maybe the boys thought they done enough and went to sleep in the second half allowing Melton South to win the half 1.2 to 6 behinds. We will need to improve substantially to beat Sunbury this week and give them a real fright going into the finals ! We know our boys have the skills and ability to beat both Sunbury and Rupo in the coming weeks. We need to listen hard and stick to the game plan that Marty has laid out. Everyone should be on the track this week, it’s a huge game coming up.

We got off to a flyer in the first quarter and kicked 2.1 to zero at the first break, with the wind. The execution of the game plan and intensity at the ball was fantastic. We dropped our guard in the second quarter though. Melton kicked 3.2 and lead by 7 points at half time. The boys bounced back in the third quarter and kicked 2.2 to Melton's 1.3. This gave Melton a narrow one point lead at three quarter time. The Rookies were up for a big last quarter and looked to have kicked the first goal which would have seen them hit the front. This was not to be however, after it was adjudged that the ball was touched. The scores were level and the boys battled hard into the breeze but were outscored 3.0 to 0.3. The end result was an 18 point victory to Melton. This was a great effort but with a bit more belief we can beat the sides above us on the ladder. We came a step closer today. Well done Rookies.

Match Comments:
The old adage of you play as you train has served the rookies well , playing for our spot in the four Marty urged the boys to train like it was a game during the week. The boys ran hard and contested hard all week , the result was a five goal to zip opening quarter for the rookies against a Woodend team that fancied their chances of taking our spot in the four. The boys were great to watch , winning the contested ball and following the plan that Marty had laid out , keep the forward line open and run into space. We won all four quarters finished the game full of running with a four goal last quarter. The boys are learning each week and starting to play together and for each other doing the 100%ers. More of the same type of play and we can threaten the top sides. Great game boys !

The Rookies travelled to Rupertswood for our round 9 clash against the top team. The boys were taught a football lesson today by a physical and skilled team that worked hard for each other from start to finish. Our boys worked hard early and matched Rupo for the contested ball. Rupo broke the game open in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Marty asked the boys not to give up and make sure we tackled hard and make them earn every kick. The boys responded with a fine team goal in the last quarter but just couldn't match the Rupo boys. Let's all take as many positives as we can from this match , some good individual performances complemented by trying new tactics and playing on at all costs will help us in the coming weeks. We are still holding our spot in the four which makes this week's game the biggest the boys have played in. Let's all get on the track work hard and consolidate a spot in the finals. Good effort boys and keep the heads up !

The rookies hosted Sunbury at Gardiner , looking to win 2 in row for the first time this season , a couple of late withdrawals left us with just one player on the bench. Our game plan was to run to space and pressure the ball carrier. The first quarter saw our boys start a little slowly and allow Sunbury to dominate the stoppages and pressure our defence. Whilst the defence tried hard Sunbury had a number of loose players in the forward line which resulted in them taking a 2 goal lead into half time. The boys are improving each week in all aspects of the game and the pressure and endeavour throughout the game was a testament to the boys. We won the last quarter and finished on the losing side by 17 points. The boys are very close to taking a top side and showed again today we can mix it with them. Another good effort boys !

The rookies travelled to Melton South for a must win game to keep us in the top four. The boys started like a house on fire taking control of the game from the first bounce, running in numbers , winning the clearances , keeping the forward line open and building a solid rebounding wall. 4 Goals 6 to zip into the wind was probably our best quarter for the year. The coach asked the boys to give it their all for four quarters Melton South improved their effort and put our boys under more pressure, however the Rookies rose to the challenge to win the quarter. Inspired by the courage of Will the rookies answered the call to open up play and run hard to space and help each other at all costs we ran out winners by 70 , some goal kicking practice and the margin could have been far greater. Coach Lakey said the 100%ers were way up this week , the most pleasing thing was the boys smarts to listen to the plan and play that way. With another solid week on the track we can upset a top team this week.

Another away game for the Under 12 White’s against Melton on the big and wide Blackwood Dve Reserve. The boys started very well giving Melton something to chase , shepherds , smothers 100%ERS for the Under 12W’s , we ran together in packs used the ball very well with great passages of play up and down the corridor we outscored Melton 3 goals to 1. The boys started the second quarter in good shape however it seemed we started to get heavy legs towards the end of the half allowing Melton to score two unanswered goals. We trailed by a point at half time. The message from Marty was to run hard when we have the ball and run hard to man up when they have the ball. We started to win some ball at the contest and the stoppages , move the ball quickly into an open forward line the Rookies kicked 3 goals for the quarter. Unfortunately, the defensive side of game suffered and we allowed Melton to score 3 goals into the wind. The final quarter was not our best , we were outplayed by a more determined team , our boys tried and ran hard although Melton proved hard to match. We are not far off these sides as we showed in the first quarter with some hard work and concentration we will beat one of the top sides soon. See you all on the track !

Match Comments:
On another perfect day for footy the Rookies travelled to Woodend for round 5. A hard fought first quarter from both sides showed that we were in for a great game. Woodend took the lead early in the game with Rookies playing as Marty would like running hard at the ball and the player with the ball. Our boys came with a determined effort in the 2nd quarter repelling Woodend from half back and running to space to provide options for the ball carrier. We took a slender lead into the long break. The coach asked the boys to hunt in packs run in numbers and that's just what the rookies did in the premiership quarter and the results showed with our best quarter for the season outscoring Woodend by 3 goals to nil. With a commanding lead and the boys showing signs of fatigue the rookies hung on to run out winners by 7 points. The boys showed today that they are starting to gel together and follow the game plan of run , run , run into space and harass the player with the ball. Well done boys see you all on the track on Tuesday and Thursday !

The rookies took on Rupo at Gardiner on another warm sunny day. True to form the boys were really good in the 1st quarter attacking the ball hard and winning the contests at ground level. The second quarter started well but followed the lines of past weeks , the rookies whilst trying hard just couldn't maintain the same intensity at the ball or the ball carrier and we allowed Rupo to kick 1.2 without scoring ourselves going into half time. The rookies came out after half time with much more aggression , ran in numbers and attacked the ball. 2 goals to Rupo's 2 for the quarter showed how we can match the opposition when we apply ourselves to the task. Rupo took the game away from the rookies with an early goal in the last quarter. Our boys have the the skills but need to maintain the intensity for 4 quarters ! This points to some hard work on the track concentrating on fitness and intensity which will allow us to run out games against the top sides. See you all at training for a big week on the track.

The Rookies took on Sunbury at Boardman Oval , after the week off the boys were keen to test themselves against the top side. Marty asked the boys for extra effort on the 1%ers and the boys responded with tackles , shepherds and running in numbers which showed our ability when switched on as we had a small lead at quarter time. Sunbury stepped up the pressure in the second quarter and took a 2 goal lead into the second half. The rookies whilst trying hard found the slicker Sunbury hard to contain in the premiership quarter. Our boys continued to fight it out to the end and the last quarter was our the best for the game. Sunbury won by 35 points and showed us what we need to do to compete with the top side , with hard work on the track and our game day minds switched on we will get better. Well done boys !

In hot conditions the Under 12 White's took on Melton South in round 2 , the first quarter showed good commitment from both sides and the scores were tied a quarter time. Some solid improvement from the Rookies who were prepared to hunt in numbers and provide support through excellent teamwork , shepherds , tackles and direct footy allowed us to take a commanding lead at half time. The second half saw the rookies take the game right away from Melton South through hard running and clever play from our onballers. The forwards did their jobs and held the ball in making it hard for the opposition to clear the lines. Our defence was super solid and repelled all attacks which didn't allow Melton South to score at all after quarter time. We ran out 68 point winners. The boys should congratulate themselves on a great team effort.

Match Comments:
The start to the season bought with it wintry and windy conditions , our boys were great in the first quarter attacking the ball with gusto at every opportunity. Scores were level at quarter time after we tackled and harrassed well. The second quarter started out much the same with the ball carrier under pressure at all times and fierce tackling was the norm throughout. Melton with bigger bodies broke away towards to end of the quarter and kicked 4 unanswered goals to go into half time with a 24 point lead. Our boys worked hard in 3rd quarter with unfortunetly little reward as Melton repelled our attacks and used the ball better in the windy conditions. To the boys credit we outscored the opposition in the last quarter with harder running and better ball movement to score 2 goals to their 1. All in all the boys tried hard all day and with continued hard work we will improve greatly in the next fews weeks. Well done boys
