Match Comments:
A flying start to the Rookies, with brilliant linking play from the first ball up all the way to Casey at full forward, in a blink of an eye, we goaled within a minute. Rupo equalised quickly however and it was clear, a tight intense game was afoot. Big Jack goaled after huge attaching pressure applied by partners in crime Phil and Connor to get the ball into his hands. Jayben was a wall in defence as usual, fearlessly taking it up to the bigger opposition players and through combining with Jezza and Matthew, created opportunities for us to drive forward out of traffic. Play was littered with examples of Josh dominating the ruck with smart, targeted tap outs and the mid field picking smart handball options to generate linking play. Tyson also showed his thoughtful play through considered kicking options. Unfortunately, we couldn’t convert more opportunities prior to quarter time and our defence battled to slow down the Rupo running game. The quarter time address was the “tuck ‘n’ run”!! Harvey took his coaches urgings literally, and did exactly as asked, tucking the ball under his arm and running to HF time and again. A great smother from Zac was typical of the Rookies desperation in defence, and was converted into an opportunity to run forward, unfortunately without result on this occasion. As Rupo took it up to us in our forward line to get the ball out to their running HB line, Phil and Jack showed great intensity to stall their run out of their back line. After a break at half time, it was clear to all, a tough second half was upon us and our boys needed to dig deep. Dig deep they did, with our defence almost immediately under pressure. Flynn led the way with unrelenting desperation on the ball, preventing goals early in the third.  Jayben continued to bob up out of traffic on the HB line to drive the ball forward, combining with Harvey, Joshua, Alex and Connor to move the ball to half forward.  Matthew Cassidy probed from HF to repeatedly find Jezza loitering at full forward who slotted one through from a mark in front. Goals were hard to come by and the big Rupo players were making their mark, clearing out of their defensive half quickly and precisely, forcing seeming unrelenting pressure on our defence. Coaches address, it’s a tough game and must be treated like final footy. Rupo were on a roll and it was great to see Lachlan amongst it, snapping at goal for a point to start our campaign in the final quarter.  Desperation from both sides was obvious, as the game was tight and well balanced.  Alex showed some great shepherding skills throughout the game as he protected his team mates from the big lumps running at them.  Casey provided the spoil of the year in the dying seconds of the game. A nail biting finish, it was extremely close and our boys should be very proud of their efforts.

Captains - Matthew and Jeremy The Rookies won the toss and started with the cyclonic, chilly wind. Josh got into the action early with some great smothers, whilst Jezza, Harvey and Flynn were working hard to clear the ball from defence with great effect. Matthew was trying to take advantage of the cyclonic conditions and kicked long out of defence. The Rookies struggled to push beyond half forward, despite Tyson working hard, and Zac's desperation. Jayben played his signature brand of footy, crashing out of traffic to clear stoppages with great effect. Connor was also in the thick of things up forward. Our hesitation looking for targets from set kicks was our undoing, with the opposition able to man up, compete for possession and create turn overs, despite some good linking play. Tall timber Jack and Josh were having an impact, Josh in the ruck dominating the clearances and Jack creating huge pressure with a trademark great defensive game. Unfortunately, no goals in the first quarter. Coach address 'look for targets, more talk and must RUN into the wind looking for support from team mates' Q2 The Rookies were now kicking into the gale. Callum showed flair with great run and bounce around the wing to drive into half forward. Lachlan was a casualty, being taken out with rough play mid quarter and had to stay off the rest of the game. The opposition pushed hard, kicking long and using the breeze well to goal. Despite their persistent pressure and 10 goal gale, our defence held up. Phil and Alex were fearless in their efforts. Whilst the Rookies were unable to convert this quarter, they defended extremely well which set us up for the premiership third quarter. Half time coach's address - after marking look for options quickly! We need to move ball forward faster' Q3 The Rookies changed it up a gear. Jonah's early running goal fired the boys up, and Jezza's persistence on the ball also inspired the group to maintain their intensity in freezing conditions. Josh was a guiding light up forward, and The Rookie's defence was sharp. Casey played his best ever quarter, getting a heap of possession and driving the ball long - unfortunately it was against us, as he was making up numbers for the opposition! Coach's address, 'do you want the win? If so, make it happen and attack into the wind this last quarter." The boys were keen and ran out full of fire. The heavy tactics continued into final quarter, with Matthew sniped by the same opposition player that had taken out Lachlan earlier. Fortunately he was ok enough to play on, and against the freezing, howling wind, The Rookies were again under siege in a tight game. With the likes of Harvey attacking the goals, the boys persisted and produced many opportunities. Zac and Harvey tried desperately hard to convert but couldn't, unfortunately, the goal post, at times got in the way of what should have been certain goals. The boys did keep the ball in our forward half for most of the quarter, taking the game to Melton and scraping home with undeniably brilliant offensive pressure.

Match Comments:
Q1 Captains Jonah and Harvey led the boys onto a pretty soggy Gardiner Reserve. Right from the outset Rookies manned up well in defense and put early pressure on Riddells’ forward line with Josh, Harvey Jonah and Flynn sharing it around effectively in front of goal. Jack provided great linking support and we had our opposition on the back foot but were taking the long way around the boundary. At quarter time Jason urged the boys to play the corridor, kick long and get their voices going. Tyson was a persistent menace to Riddell, fighting for possession fiercely. Q2 Right from the centre bounce Rookies continued their great form, with a great tap down sheppard and hand pass link ups from mid field to get the ball to Zac who goaled on the run in from half forward flank. Casey and Jez inspired fast moving play with good linking handballs on the run. Defense was a highlight as the boys held defensive position well, and Jayben gave everyone a lesson in effective shepparding. Q3 Rookies were really rolling now, and right from the first bounce Jez, Harvey, Flynn ad Josh combined to goal early. Phil showed flashes of brilliance with his quick thinking handballs to Harvey who seemed to have been running the whole game, and who converted from in front. Our tall timber were firing, with Lachlan exerting effective pressure repeatedly in defense with goal saving smothers. Q4 Josh was proving a force in the ruck, and on-ballers were quickly sending the ball forward. Zac, Lachlan and Harvey picked up lots of possessions as Rookies continued to force the ball into their attacking half. Matthew was proving a headache around the stoppages, creating space quickly and finding plenty of options as Rookies

Match Comments:
The last time we met, we won by about 10 goals, this encounter was sure to be closer with a muddy ground to content with. Captains for the day were Sam and Jack. The game kicked off in fine style with Phillip leading early to take a nice grab and then convert our first goal. Our runners Zachary and Matthew took advantage of good team handball play set up by Jayben who run the ball out of defence and into Connors hands to convert for another goal. Jayben then snaped a late goal in the quarter to really press our dominance and combined with persistent effective defence along our backline, the Rookies were off to a flyer. A learning point from the quarter was the need for all players to hold their positions, as too often, the Rookies would crowd the ball, then clear it and realise there was no one to kick to. The second quarter picked up from where we left off with an inspired Matthew running off the ½ backline to deliver the ball into the big hands of Joshua D who straightened to convert our 4th unanswered goal. Jeremy was now in the thick of it causing havoc to the opposition players and Connor worked hard with good movement into the safe hands of Sam. Big Lachlan persisted in attack and really was the key to our offensive play starting deep in defence combined with Phillip who once again showed no fear barging into the packs with head over ball. Harvey strived to create breakaway opportunities out of packs, and combined well with Jack whose shepherding was textbook. Lachly and Phillip were in career best form. Jonahs run and carry was great but he was reminded to concentrate on finding a team mate once he has broken clear The second half saw the game change with Woodend flooding their back line in response to our attacking play. This was a great opportunity to learn defensive lines and with guidance, Joshua D and Flynn ,Callum took leadership roles to ensure our defensive lines were in place to repel any offensive attack from Woodend. This worked well. The 3 quarter time address had the boys rallied and fired up to win the last quarter and beat the defensive flood with greater intensity and to trust their skills. Zachary got into it early with an abundance of touches across the ½ back line and running play by Jeremy to Harvey to Casey to Matthew showed how the rookies can beat any flood with good team play. Well done boys, you are a credit to not only this football club, but also Gisborne.

Match Comments:
Play at the start centered on our backline, as we were immediately under pressure from Rupertswood. Our boys responded with some great run out of defence. Of note was Jacks early dominance at full back, effectively blocking and choosing good options to clear the ball to running options. Jack showed the rest of the team how playing in front is the only way to go. Matthew had multiple runs through the centre trying to kick start the team into action. Zac did his usual taking a wonderful grab in front of goal but ended up being little too far out to score. Jayben was fearless as usual, crashing through defensive lines in efforts to take the ball forward. Casey was inspiring, linking many passages of play together. Coach’s qtr time note – ‘More Kicking!’ The second quarter had Harvey kick our first goal and we were away, Casey, in career best form, continued to make smart play through the centre finding options. The Rookies manned up well in defence, smothering Rupo’s frequent attacks by big bodied forwards. Connor was marking well up forward. Rupo’s bigger boys were still bashing through our packs and converting more chances. Highlight of the quarter was running play Tyson to Harvey to Ozane toward goal and whilst we couldn’t convert, the run was a brilliant passage of team oriented play. Lachlan had some fine touches across the centre. Coach half time note – ‘better defence, but if Rupo want to keep bashing through the packs, perhaps we can just rip the ball out of their hands. Don’t let them run past without giving it a go. The third quarter had some great moments starting with Tyson’s great mark and Flynn’s gather from the pack and millimeter perfect kick to Jeremy in front of goals. The rain started to tumble down and the conditions were going to be tough leading into the last quarter. Coaches 3 quarter address – ‘Run Run Run this game out and steal the ball from their hands!’ Rupo started the last quarter with the ominous crash and bash through our defenses, however, with the likes of Jack leading the way stealing the ball, Rupo was now under pressure. Some promising link and run out of center from Alex and Harvey, then Zac to Connor. Phil was instrumental in joining passages of play together, passing quickly and shepherding well. Great examples of doing what he’s been coached! Although our conversion in front of goal was not the best today, I think we just scraped home by the skin of our teeth.

Match Comments:
A big welcome back to Jonah Hickey this week! Gisborne vs Melton Juniors was sure to be a measure of our improvement this season. If we can recall, this team beat us easily in the 1st round. The instruction this week was to concentrate on working the corridor. This was evident in the 1st quarter with great execution and handball play through the corridor which resulted in a wonderful goal. At times however, the ball would come back and we would pay the price due to not manning up. Flynn was in his usual place at the bottom of the packs and clearing the ball well off the ground. Quarter 2 started well when Zac ran away with the tap out of centre and almost kicked what would have been an exciting goal, he later marked in the dying seconds in front of goal but couldn't quite convert. Casey was awesome in defence at full back against bigger, aggressive older players. We were under siege for most of the quarter and the boys held up well in defence, blocking and working together to protect their goal. We took a handy hard earned lead into the half time break. Jonah started the 2nd half in blistering form driving the ball repeatedly into the forward line and kicking what was surely goal of the year with a wonderful sprint out of the centre. Despite this combined with Jeremy's many touches we managed only few chances to convert. Although we took a slender lead into the last quarter, our boys did not give up but were simply out run by a bigger team. This is a vast improvement from where we were in round 1. Well done boys.

Round 7 saw the rookies play away 'again', this time travelling to Rupo. After winning the toss, captains Flynn and Jayben instructed our team to kick with a 1 goal breeze. Jack Ozanne put the boys on the board early followed by a handy goal by Sam Stephens. Our defence was under siege but great blocking and shepherding was on display by the Rookies'. A wonderful individual effort from Jeremy Nugara to conduct a smother under pressure was a highlight of the sustained defensive pressure. We took a comfortable lead into the 2nd term which was consolidated with an early goal by Connor. Matthew Cassidy created play all over the ground and Phillip Cornish was under the packs gathering hard ball possessions at will. Joshua DeJonge was a handful in the ruck for the opposition with superb tap work and it was good to see Jayben's ever fearless run through traffic, thence place a nice pass after 8 steps. The 1/2 time instructions were to create further pressure in the back line which inturn frustrated Rupo, hence creating turnovers. However, we could sense Rupo were on the surge in the 3rd quarter. To the Rookies credit, we stopped the surge with a stunning checkside goal by Harvey. The theme to the last quarter was to come off the ground 'stuffed', in which they did. The Rookies can hold their heads up high in a somewhat tough last quarter where Rupo played hard and simply out ran us. We had tried our best, but the Rupo bigger boys got the job done....but only just. Flynn's pack high mark in front of goals in the dying seconds of the game was a highlight, only not to be paid. Bad luck Flynn, it was a great spectacle for all of us.

Match Comments:
Another week of football after a hard week on the track. The young talented kids were set for the Friday Night Blockbuster with a rookie coach coaching the team for the first time against Woodend. A chilly night it was at Woodend. The message before the game was for lots of talk and to play as a team. Things looked shaky with Woodend kicking the first before the team started to get the train rolling. With Jeremy and Lachy captains they both led the way with beautiful teamwork from Jeremy to assist a goal from Lachy. Tyson strung together a huge amount of form with too many possesions to count, and also young Josh Stephens showed heaps of progress. It was pleasing to see him play so well. Congratulations Tyson and Josh S! The boys manged to grab the lead but were told they needed to shepard and block the oposition. The second quarter was great, with Tyson and Josh S stepping up again along with the impressive Matthew Cassidy kicking a goal. Jeremy kept his great form going with loads of possessions. Big Josh up forward provided a huge target even though hurting his shoulder but kicked two big goals. In the third Flynn found some dominance like the superstar Gary Ablett with plenty of run and dash. The the most pleasing thing was when Woodend pushed us we fought back and punished them - fantastic to see. The boys sheparded more and strangled one kid so much he could go nowhere - fantastic football. After all this Jayben finds the footy in the middle of the ground, runs and has a huge bounce. What play from a young star. In the last quarter of the Block buster we ran away with the game, proving too strong for Woodend and continuing our run of wins. The highlight was a team play down the wing started from Matthew to Conor to Harvey to Casey to Jack and the finally Jeremy who goals. Thats play of the year, that's what teamwork is boys - fantastic! Casey showed the progress of teaching him to steady. As a team we should be proud of our efforts. I was proud to coach a bright young team to a fantastic win.

Match Comments:
Melton Centrals came to Sankey and got a slight feel of the chilly mornings yet to come in sunny Gisborne. We divided the ground into half, and obviously played on the sunny side just hoping for a little warmth. Melton Centrals were several players short, so we rotated three players into their team each quarter. It was good to see our boys helping them out and still trying hard. This was evident when Harvey broke the packs to kick a goal and create several other opportunities. The Rookies took off from where they left off last week with great team play. Callum, & Connor started with run creating several goals through Matthew, Joshua and Jeremy, taking a very handy lead into the quarter time break. By half time, Flynn, Harvery, Samuel & Jayben came into the game with some great blocking and Matthew already had two goals to his name. The half time address was for the team to concentrate on shepherding. We didn’t see too much of this in the third quarter, so more emphasis was placed in the three quarter time address with wonderful results shown in the last quarter with many shepherds being made. Zachary wanted to go up forward and did not disappoint with his goal sneak abilities and Samuel created opportunities with many hard ball gets. Casey needed to take his time kicking at goals and ended the game in fine style. The very last play of the day brought goose bumps to everyone’s skin with a full length of the field handball run with many players involved. How wonderful to watch. We look forward to the return of Jonah within the next couple of weeks.

Mother's Day and the kids did not disappoint with some wonderful team play. To say the kids are really bonding is an understatement. The emphasis on team work was really highlighted when Jack was on a tight angle in the pocket and centred the ball to a player in a better position to have a shot at goal. The game started well with Harvey and Phillip combining well to put a goal on the board early. Riddell then took it up to us, but our continued pressure with the blocking had us run out easy winners. Matthew, Harvey and Jeremy (3 great goals) were all inspirational with wonderful running play. Sam sold the candy better than Andy McLeod and the desperation show by Zachary in the dying minutes of the game to take another spectacular mark, was brilliant. Flynn's continual blocking created turnovers allowing the likes of Alex to bust away with the ball. The two Joshua did well and Tyson is starting to get amongst it. Casey got the $5 coaches award for great play along the centre whilst in the ruck and Caelan scored the lolly award for a wonderful last quarter. Let's not get complacent and keep training hard to be the best we can be.

Match Comments:
Up against Sunbury last Sunday and I feel the kids are really starting to 'click'. For those who were there, you would have to agree it was a truly wonderful game to watch with a lot of good link up play. Rules 1 & 2 are starting to be adhered to, and the placement of name tags (thanks to Jason) helped not only the coaching staff, but I am sure all the players found it worthwhile. The game started well with Josh staring in the Ruck which in turn spurred the team on and got the confidence going early. This confidence helped get several goals on the board, with two quick ones to Connor who finished the day with and outstanding effort of four goals. Flynn, Jack and Phil were great in defence, ensuring the ball rebounded out of the opposition forward line with minimal fuss and Alex got to the bottom of the packs to clear the ball often. The first half finished in fine style with Zachary running back to defend three loose players then running on to take a good mark and kick a wonderful goal. The second half started slow, hence, the team learnt that no matter how far you are in front, a 5 minute lapse of concentration can really hurt the scoreboard with Sunbury kicking several unanswered goals. To the boys' credit, they came back hard to kick the last 5 goals with no reply. Matthew was simply brilliant with great run and carry of the ball finishing well with superb foot skills. Jack had patience getting rid of the ball which in turn lead us to scoring a goal, perfect team play! Captains for the day Harvey and Joshua did not disappoint leading by example. $5 award to Josh for a great start and getting the team up and running, Lolly award to Alex who ensured the bottom of the packs were always clear of the ball. Well done!

Match Comments:
A stark contrast from last week where it was cold and windy, this week we had warm conditions for round 2 against Rupo. Rupo started strong kicking the first couple of unanswered goals, however, they did play with 17 on the field and were quite reluctant to take two off in accordance with the RDLF rules. Having said that, our boys took on the challenge and once again Flynn was in hand of a good smother and took a good mark under pressure. Caelan was once again outstanding in defence and Connor placed his kicks well. Jayben played a sound roll creating run out of the middle, which in turn allowed Zachary a shot at goal which unfortunately was smothered. The second quarter started with Lachlan running full length of the ground to block a Rupo player, thus creating a turnover which leads to Jeremy kicking an excellent goal. The boys were sucking the water in at half time and the further instruction was to block, block and do some more blocks. Harvey was a star with his great leading and positive approach to the ball, this payed dividends as Jayben honored some of those leads with good passes. Casey had some good play around the middle of the ground and Zachary had the highlight of the day with a wonderful smother and subsequent blocking effort. Callum ran well out of defence. It was a challenging game but a great team effort. This week’s coaches’ 5 buck award presented to: Zachary for that wonderful smother. Lolly Shop Awards given to: Lachlan for running hard all day and Harvey with his great calling and leading. Well done boys.

All the kids!
Match Comments:
The first game of the season was against Melton on a somewhat chilly morning. The kids fared well, considering the weather and commenced the game kicking against a strong westerly wind, hence our defenders, Harvey, Jack, Callum, Phillip & Oscar were under pressure from the first moment. Considering the early pressure, our boys manned up very well. As the game went on, our onballers gathered some momentum and eventually the Rookies kicked a couple of un-answered goals with great delivery into the forward line through Connor, and smart play from Zachary. Another goal, started all the way in the back line with the likes of Matthew and Casey teeing up with great run out of defence. Jayben muscled up and bashed through the packs, Jack was inspirational in the Ruck and Sam’s leads were great. Flynn tried tirelessly to provide options around the ground and Tyson proved to be the real deal in defence. Caelan did his best to keep the ½ back line in order. The joint captains for the day were both Jonah and Matthew. Jonah tried hard around the packs with some great hard ball gets. And Matthew scored the coaches award, for an inspirational day out. Well done boys on our first game of the year!
