Match Comments:
Led ably by our captains Ryan Seymour, Baxter Slater and Lachlan Shore, our boys took to the tacky Sankey Reserve to begin play. We knew the opposition today would be strong after the blockbuster game under lights earlier in the season. It looked like business as usual in the first quarter however when Oscar Hare ran through the lines and dobbed a goal; although it would be the last one we would score until deep into the third quarter. Having said that, against bigger opposition, our boys’ determination and great pack-marking meant that we able to limit Melton South’s penetration into the forward line as well. It seemed almost with ease at times that Ryan Seymour and Kyle Anderson took the big grab whilst the pack fell from around them. Not to be outdone, our smaller guys such as Will Price and Caedon Lane – usually known better for their crumbing and running abilities – took two of the best contested marks of the season. It was absolutely fantastic to see the four of these boys’ confidence growing with every game they get under their belt. Riley Szkilnyk’s determination across half-back meant that he formed an almost impenetrable wall. Many times Melton South made the mistake of trying to go past him, only to find Riley taking the mark and rebounding play the Rookies way. It was great to see Baxter Slater back in full flight. Coming off a couple of weeks of sickness, Baxter’s gritty, hard-running ball carry continually moved the ball forward; setting up opportunities for our forwards – forwards such as the high-flying Joshua Hickmott who stood tall and kicked an extraordinary goal in the last quarter. The Krakouer brothers – Jack Keeping and Sam Mackay – were back to their best as well, finding each other in space, smothering the opposition’s kicks and making sure that the ball was delivered neatly to their teammates further up the ground. This combination meant that Melton South often looked like they were spectating, such was their ease. But the highlight of the day was definitely the after match team song. Not since the Western Bulldogs’ win the day before had a side had so many people singing in the circle. Parents, siblings and I reckon even passers-by were drawn into the mix. It was a “huge” song sung by a very proud group. Well done guys. Another hard fought game played against bigger opposition. This team of Rookies should always hold the heads high.

Match Comments:
A flying start to the Rookies, with brilliant linking play from the first ball up all the way to Casey at full forward, in a blink of an eye, we goaled within a minute. Rupo equalised quickly however and it was clear, a tight intense game was afoot. Big Jack goaled after huge attaching pressure applied by partners in crime Phil and Connor to get the ball into his hands. Jayben was a wall in defence as usual, fearlessly taking it up to the bigger opposition players and through combining with Jezza and Matthew, created opportunities for us to drive forward out of traffic. Play was littered with examples of Josh dominating the ruck with smart, targeted tap outs and the mid field picking smart handball options to generate linking play. Tyson also showed his thoughtful play through considered kicking options. Unfortunately, we couldn’t convert more opportunities prior to quarter time and our defence battled to slow down the Rupo running game. The quarter time address was the “tuck ‘n’ run”!! Harvey took his coaches urgings literally, and did exactly as asked, tucking the ball under his arm and running to HF time and again. A great smother from Zac was typical of the Rookies desperation in defence, and was converted into an opportunity to run forward, unfortunately without result on this occasion. As Rupo took it up to us in our forward line to get the ball out to their running HB line, Phil and Jack showed great intensity to stall their run out of their back line. After a break at half time, it was clear to all, a tough second half was upon us and our boys needed to dig deep. Dig deep they did, with our defence almost immediately under pressure. Flynn led the way with unrelenting desperation on the ball, preventing goals early in the third.  Jayben continued to bob up out of traffic on the HB line to drive the ball forward, combining with Harvey, Joshua, Alex and Connor to move the ball to half forward.  Matthew Cassidy probed from HF to repeatedly find Jezza loitering at full forward who slotted one through from a mark in front. Goals were hard to come by and the big Rupo players were making their mark, clearing out of their defensive half quickly and precisely, forcing seeming unrelenting pressure on our defence. Coaches address, it’s a tough game and must be treated like final footy. Rupo were on a roll and it was great to see Lachlan amongst it, snapping at goal for a point to start our campaign in the final quarter.  Desperation from both sides was obvious, as the game was tight and well balanced.  Alex showed some great shepherding skills throughout the game as he protected his team mates from the big lumps running at them.  Casey provided the spoil of the year in the dying seconds of the game. A nail biting finish, it was extremely close and our boys should be very proud of their efforts.

Boys, we cannot afford these poor starts due to our attitude - we must be switched on from the start. Having said that, we worked our way back into the game well and in the end it was a solid win against very good opposition. Terrific games from Liam, Tommy, Jack B, JJ, Patty Mc, and Jimmy.

A great first quarter boys but we lost concentration in the second quarter. We must be disciplined for the whole game, not just one quarter of footy. To your credit as a team you all played well in the second half with lots of run, vision, tackles and long direct kicking. The last quarter you moved the ball from the full back to the full forward in four great kicks. Boys, you must all start to prepare for the remaining games of the season that means early Saturday nights and well rested up. Great game today by Nick; Boothy, Brodie, Cambo, Mitch, Johnny & Brent and players coming into form are Lachy, Alex, Matt and Riley. Let’s get to training early! Coach Andrew Campbell.

In a bruising encounter which saw Harry Sullivan stretchered off in the second quarter, Sunbury led 7.4 to 0.0 at half time. I appealed to the boy`s to dig deep and pull out all stops. They responded admirably and restricted Sunbury to 1.2 in the 3rd quarter. The end result of 11.10 to 0.0 didn`t reflect how hard we fought and the fact that we never gave in. Our turnovers hurt us and allowed Sunbury to create the loose man at will.On a brighter note, Harry is ok and is recovering at home, having sustained no major injuries. Thanks boys for fighting it out and never giving in over a difficult game and season. I have seen improvement in all of you.Best of luck boys and thanks to the parents, especially Garry Mc,Kym, Mark Spargo, Mark Testro,Wardy,Deb Sullivan, Melanie Budge and the 2 Kerry`s who have helped out over the season. Good luck for our 6 reps who have gone up to the Red`s for the rest of the season.I`m sure they will do us all proud and continue to work hard on their development opportunity.

Match Comments:
Round 13 , the Rookies travelled to Boardman to take on Sunbury , for the past few weeks the boys efforts ( except the 2nd half against Melton South ) have been fantastic. Training has improved out of sight and the boys are starting to gain belief in each other the team rules and game plan. Marty has focused on game drills at training for the past 8 weeks , this week things started to pay off , we had not beaten a team above for the whole season until Sunday. The rookies burst out of the blocks , winning the clearances and running the opposition of their legs with slick handball and delivery to the open forward we pilled on 4.0 to Nil. Kicking into the wind in the second quarter the rookies continued to play in front , run in numbers and attack the Sunbury ball carriers at every opportunity this resulted in our best quarter for the season we held Sunbury to 1.1 whilst managing to kick 3.0 ourselves. The coach encouraged the boys not to rest on a great first half and continue to do all the things we had done in the first half , Sunbury came out hard not wishing to let us have one over them 2 weeks prior to playing each other in the finals , however the Rookies responded immediately to every Sunbury goal with one of our own allowing us to go into the final break 9.1 to 3.1. Sunbury again tried very hard and kicked the first of the quarter but the rookies dug deep and ran out the game strongly allowing only one score for the quarter. As our belief in each other grows we will continue to improve as players and as a team each week , we get the chance to take on the top side this week , a solid week on the track should hold in good stead and give us the opportunity to take another big scalp this week. Fantastic effort by each and every one of the boys , look forward to a big week on the track.

Friday Night Blockbuster at the G (Gardner). Conditions, although a little chilly, were perfect for footy. Unfortunately, the Sunbury bodies were just a bit too big for us on this occasion but our boys toiled away with great endeavour. Liam and Ben were defiant in the backline, Samii & Lachie used their height to advantage & Riley & Tom F were hard as nails in the middle. Cam & Callum E were solid in defence, whilst Ryan & Nathan were good targets across half forward. A very special effort from our Under 10 White boys, Liam Spears, Nash Kemp & Sam Graham who not only helped our team out with numbers but were also highly competitive and not at all out of their depth. Much appreciated boys!!!

Match Comments:
Today’s game was the highlight of the season. The boys turned up today all fired up to do their best today at Gardner reserve and they had a fantastic one point win against Rolling Meadows. The Rookies trained very very well on this week and they played how they trained. I am so proud of the improvement in the boys. We were first in for the ball, we ran hard, we kicked long we chased and tackled hard. There were so many highlights, Jacob O in the centre clearances was fantastic. Beau’s work reading the play so well off half back was great. Jacob M and Rory did so many exciting dashes out of our backline. Leon took some of the best marks of the season. Aaron was a great go to guy in half forward. Ethan and Daniel worked hard in the ruck and forward line and went an some great runs. Harry and Michael were fantastic on ballers. Liam, Joey, John, Craig and James continue to get better and better. Caelan and Mitchell were very hard to beat in defence. Joel, Jordan, Tommy and Hayden provided great contests in our forward line and helped us set up the great win. The last quarter was very exciting with both teams desperate to win. I am sure many of the parents and supporters enjoyed the win just as much as the players. I am very happy to let everyone know that Caelan is ok and may even be fine to play this Friday. Boys keep up the great work at training. Always believe in yourself and never give in. We play our last game of the year at Gardner this Friday. Let’s train hard during the week and make sure it is a good one. Well Done!!!

A very early start to Sunday. The footy was ugly like it always is against Sunbury. If we can play more than two quarters of footy the other teams will be very worried about the way we play. for example being first to the ball ,putting ourhead over the pill and tackling hard ,boys if we spread the ball to open spaces and run with it we play a lot better than if it is like a rugby match .GOOOOO ROOKIES P.S we had a very passionate coach on the weekend so lets see if we can quite him down a bit with good footy.

The Rookies were host to Diggers Rest for their last home game of the season. Today we had the extra incentive of Isaac’s birthday and the whopping big cake he bought to celebrate! The Rookies were asked to show off some of the skills they had been working on at training, pressure, kicking long, linking up handballs and a minimum of two tackles each. The first quarter the Rookies had most of the play around their forward line but Diggers defence played in front and repelled every advance we made. The Rookies were not moving the ball as smart as they could and were crowding the forward line in bunches and not spreading out. Somehow Tip Toe Michael found some space and swooped onto a loose ball picking it up cleanly and scored our first goal and his first for the year. (Well done Michael!) Quarter time scores – Gisborne 1.2 to Diggers 0 At the break the Rookies were asked to open up the forward line and spread out and share the ball around. Again, most of the play was around our half forward line but Diggers again defended well and our ball use was not great. Our defence stood up when required and kept Diggers scoreless at halftime. Half time scores – Gisborne 1.3 to Diggers 0 Some water, oranges and encouragement to put our footy brains into action was required at half time to lift our efforts at being first for the footy, run more and look for our teammates. Well it certainly worked because we were much more desperate and used the ball a lot cleaner. The forward line played in front, the wall to defend the footy from Diggers clearing it out was working. Jack Manago scored a great goal, we also had many other attempts with Michael narrowly missing twice. Although we kicked five points it was great to see the endeavour by all. Three quarter time scores – Gisborne 2.8 to Diggers 0 Snakes for energy and everyone wanting to play forward, the Rookies were told to continue playing as a team and look out for each other. Diggers came out challenging and within a few minutes they scored their first goal. I think this fired up the Rookies because they then kicked the next four straight! Jack M, Adam, Liam M and the Tomahawk sharking a pass from Jack millimetres from the line. Liam Howard presented well across half forward, marking well and creating play to have input to two of the goals. Well done Rookies, great finish. Final scores – Gisborne 6.8.44 to Diggers 1.1.7 Special thanks to Sonia and Colleen for organising the fish and chips for everybody and Maryann, Milli and (Dave for baking the cake).
